People often ask us this question: “What’s the difference between gel polish and Shellac?” To illustrate, we like to compare it to the difference between Kleenex and tissue. Just as Kleenex is a specific brand of tissue, Shellac is a line of gel polish created by CND. A typical gel polish service involves a base coat, color, and top coat—this is what most people are familiar with. However, the Shellac line has been so well marketed that it has become synonymous with gel polish.
On the other hand, gel manicures take it a step further. They include all the elements of a standard gel polish manicure, but with an added layer of gel that provides greater structure and strength to the nail. The viscosity of gel allows your nail artist to sculpt the nail properly, strengthening it in ways that a typical gel polish base coat does not. You can absolutely apply a gel layer over natural nails to help maintain longer lengths.
Many clients find that gel polish alone isn’t strong enough to support the long lengths they desire, which is why gel overlays have become our most popular service. Once an overlay grows out, your next appointment will simply involve a refill. It’s worth noting that gel overlays are often referred to as structured manicures or gel manicures, which is why we sometimes ask for clarification when clients book their appointments.
Still confused? Let’s simplify it:
Gel Polish Manicure / Shellac Manicure
Pros:
- Great for individuals who have no trouble growing their nails to their desired length and just want a nice, shiny finish.
Cons:
- Gel polish/Shellac typically lasts up to 2 weeks without chipping. While there can be exceptions, this is the general guideline.
Gel Manicure / Overlay / Structured Manicure
Pros:
- Stronger than gel polish alone, allowing clients to maintain lengths that usually exceed their natural nails.
- Can last up to 4 weeks without major issues.
- Offers a shiny finish.
Cons:
- The service may take a little longer.
- Gel may not be strong enough for extreme lengths; clients should consider their ideal nail length in relation to their lifestyle.
